Storm damage & recovery

Throughout history, human’s development of roofing techniques has included a variety of natural resources, methods and applications. From wood, mud and straw, to tiling, shingles and beyond, one thing many of us take for granted is the necessity of a structurally sound and properly functioning roof – something that has been essential to man’s survival since the dawn of time.

A quality roof is designed to be a protective covering over the top of a building. The performance of any roof depends on an entire system of products working and performing together. A high-performance roof system is comprised of shingles, tiles, or slate and includes underlayment, flashings, fastener placement, ventilation and attic insulation.

Hail Recovery

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), hail causes an average $1 billion in damage each year. Hail falls along paths scientists call hail swaths, which vary from a few square acres to large belts up to 10 miles wide and 100 miles long. The most severe hailstorms typically occur in the central plains states, where hail may grow to baseball or softball size due to strong thunderstorm updraft potential caused by complex atmospheric dynamics. In contrast, penny or quarter-sized hail is more common in other parts of the United States. Based on the size of the hailstones, hail fall can create concealed or extensive damage to the point of breaking windows and putting holes through roofing and siding.

Wind Recovery

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), hurricanes, tornadoes, and high winds cause a combined average of $7.3 billion in damage each year.

Roofing materials are subject to damage from strong winds and flying debris. Generally, roofs are not designed to withstand winds of hurricane and tornado intensity. However, roofs may also be damaged by winds of moderate intensity, such as gusts that may reach 50 to 75 miles per hour. These moderate winds often create roof damage that cannot be seen from the ground. The primary cause of this wind damage is the partial vacuum created by wind blowing over the edge of the roof. Nature tries to neutralize the low-pressure area by bringing in air from a higher-pressure area, usually from inside the building. This air pushes up on the bottom side of the roof assembly and, over time, loosens fasteners and breaks the adhesion, making the roof susceptible to damage from the next moderate or strong wind.

Violent winds can get underneath siding and separate it from the exterior wall of a structure. Windblown debris can puncture, scratch or gouge siding.
